- The U.S. Postal Service will open 14 new sorting and delivery centers between May and July, according to agency announcements on April 22 and April 23.
- The facility openings are happening across 12 states and include locations in Miami and Phoenix. The agency said the launches will not spark Post Office closures or change local Post Office retail and PO Box delivery services.
- Commercial shippers should bring packages and flat bundles for drop shipment to the sorting and delivery center serving the ZIP Code for the destination address, according to the Postal Service.

Dive Insight:
Sorting and delivery centers are large-scale operations that consolidate work previously handled by smaller delivery units in the area. The Postal Service has nearly 19,000 delivery units, the last stop for volume before final-mile delivery, in its network.
"The Postal Service has targeted key markets where it is beneficial to aggregate delivery units into fewer, larger, centrally located S&DCs — leveraging both repurposed and new facilities — to simplify the entire network and create a more reliable and efficient Postal Service," the agency said in the notices.
The Postal Service has already launched more than 179 sorting and delivery centers across the country, Postmaster General CEO David Steiner said during a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee hearing in March. That's a large jump from the 96 openings the agency reported in May 2025, as dozens of new centers have come online in places such as Baltimore and Stamford, Connecticut.
The new sorting and delivery centers "feature advanced package sortation equipment, charging infrastructure for electric delivery vehicles, and optimized transportation to and from processing facilities," Steiner said.
Overhauling the existing Postal Service network is a key component of the agency's long-term plan to improve its financial outlook and increase service reliability. Steiner warned members of Congress that service reductions and price increases are on the table if lawmakers don't move to increase the Postal Service's borrowing limit.
