Dive Brief:
- Nippon Express Holdings launched a five-day delivery option from the Port of Los Angeles to several destinations across the United States, according to an Oct. 5 press release.
- Under the optional service, called “US 5-Day Cross,” two-driver teams will operate non-stop long-haul routes from Nippon Express warehouses to U.S. destinations that are within 100 miles of designated metropolitan areas, per the release.
- The post-arrival distribution capability is part of the logistics company’s NX Ocean Fast Track service from Asia to North America, which was initially launched in June. This ocean service also ensures container release within 24 hours at the Port of Los Angeles.
Dive Insight:
Nippon Express’ new service aims to address schedule reliability concerns that exist in ocean shipping, which has been impacted by recent typhoons in Asia and weather-induced impacts to routes such as at the Panama Canal.
“Against a backdrop of challenges that include longer ocean freight lead times attributable to geopolitical risks and delays in U.S. rail transport, there is also a growing need for rapid and punctual transport as well as advanced security measures after arrival in the United States,” per the release.
As part of the US 5-Day Cross service, shippers also have access to real-time cargo tracking, per the press release. Dedicated devices are attached to cargo during transit, which uses a light sensor to detect and alert users of unauthorized openings, reducing the risk of cargo theft. The built-in sensors also record and visualize data such as temperature, humidity and impact during transit.
