Dive Brief:
- Amazon has opened operations facilities in the West Virginia communities of Davisville and Beaver as it pushes for faster deliveries in more rural areas, according to an April 1 announcement from West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
- The two locations feature small-scale fulfillment operations focusing on delivering household goods, pet supplies and other frequently ordered items. The facilities will support about 500 jobs, including Amazon employees and drivers that work for fleets contracted by Amazon to deliver packages.
- “For the first time, West Virginians will see Amazon delivery trucks operating right here at home,” Morrisey said. “That means faster delivery, new jobs, and more opportunity for our communities.”
Dive Insight:
Amazon's facility launches in West Virginia will help enable same-day services for some orders in nearby communities, per the announcement, building upon the e-commerce giant's recent rapid delivery gains.
In 2025, Amazon's same-day deliveries grew 70% year over year amid demand for fast shipping of food and essentials. The company also announced one-hour and three-hour delivery options last month. Three-hour delivery is already available in smaller communities like Cornwall, Pennsylvania, and Harrah, Oklahoma.
Now, Amazon is pushing to deliver faster in the Mountain State. Amazon spokesperson Sam Fisher said customers within a 65-mile radius of either the Davisville or Beaver facilities should notice faster delivery times, according to a West Virginia Public Broadcasting report. Davisville is near the city of Parkersburg, which has a population of nearly 30,000 people, and Beaver is close to Beckley, a city with a population of over 16,000, per Census data.
Smaller communities can be tough for parcel carriers to serve efficiently, with fewer potential customers spread out over lengthier routes compared to large cities. But Amazon is pouring $4 billion into expanding its rural shipping capabilities, with delivery stations popping up across the country. By the end of 2026, Amazon aims to have tripled its rural delivery network's size.
