Walmart plans to build a 1.5-million-square-foot automated fulfillment center in Carnesville, Georgia, according to an Aug. 27 press release from the Georgia Department of Economic Development.
The high-tech, next-generation fulfillment center represents a $1.3 billion investment and will create 1,000 jobs, per the release. Construction is slated to start in late 2026.
The retailer operates 209 Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in Georgia, as well as 11 supply chain facilities, per the release.
Walmart’s next-generation fulfillment centers are strategically located to expand same-day and next-day shipping capabilities across the U.S., per the release. The retailer first outlined plans for the high-tech facilities in 2022, saying it planned to build four next-generation fulfillment centers over the next three years. In 2023, Walmart announced a fifth next-generation fulfillment facility set to open in California this year. The retailer said the addition aims to help Walmart reach more of the West Coast with next- or two-day shipping.
Besides its fulfillment network, Walmart has also been investing elsewhere in its supply chain, with spending expected to peak over the course of this year and 2027. Automation remains a strategic priority for the retailer. For instance, Walmart plans to retrofit 23 of its 42 regional distribution centers with automation, and intends to eventually upgrade all of its locations. As of 2025, more than half of Walmart’s e-commerce fulfillment center volume moved through automated systems.
