Walmart plans to permanently shutter a fulfillment center in Matteson, Illinois, impacting 111 employees, according to a March 27 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice.
All facility operations will be relocated to other NextGen facilities within Walmart’s fulfillment network, per the notice.
Affected employees will be eligible for a $7,500 incentive to transfer to open roles at select facilities. Some workers may also qualify for relocation benefits. Associates will have access to several support services as well, according to the notice.
“Affected associates can also apply to positions at Walmart stores, Sam’s Club locations, or other company facilities during a 90-day paid transition period and may be eligible for a one-time transaction payment,” per the letter.
Employee separations are effective May 29 for those who do not secure employment with Walmart, according to the WARN.
Walmart also recently announced its intention to close a fulfillment center in Worcester, Massachusetts, which is part of the retailer’s larger fulfillment network evolution.
In 2022, Walmart outlined plans to open four high-tech, “next generation” fulfillment centers. Walmart has since begun building its fifth NextGen facility, which is set to open this year.
"Our next generation facilities will give associates an exciting opportunity to work in a newly designed work environment that prioritizes associate comfort and is powered by state-of-the-art automation technology,” per the notice.
