Walmart bought a more than 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Salt Lake City, a company spokesperson confirmed in an email to Supply Chain Dive.
The retail giant leased the property for several years prior to the sale, the spokesperson said. Walmart announced plans to build the facility in 2021 and begin operating it by 2022.
As of Jan. 31, Walmart managed 195 distribution facilities in the U.S., including 31 sites that serve Sam’s Club locations, according to a securities filing. The company leased 70 of those sites, per the filing.
The Salt Lake City facility is situated on roughly 60 acres and features a cross-dock industrial building. It is located within 10 miles of a Union Pacific intermodal hub and the Salt Lake City International Airport, according to a press release emailed to Supply Chain Dive.
Walmart has grown its supply chain footprint elsewhere in the country since the end of January, opening a 1-million-square-foot distribution center in Jacksonville, Florida, last month.
