Dive Brief:
- UPS' Happy Returns has expanded its network of return drop-off locations by more than 1,700 through a partnership with UPS authorized shipping outlets, the company announced Tuesday.
- Happy Returns now has 10,000 drop-off locations, known as Return Bars, nationwide for consumers to access. The reverse logistics provider said the growth reinforces its standing "as the largest consolidated return network in the U.S., now more than three times the size of the next-largest alternative."
- The additions primarily come from Annex Brands and PackageHub Business Centers locations offering various shipping services with multiple parcel carriers. "It's kind of a natural growth for us to expand into these because these are already places that are authorized to ship using the UPS logo," CEO and co-founder David Sobie told Supply Chain Dive in an interview.
Dive Insight:
The newfound reach announced Tuesday means 79% of the U.S. population now lives within five miles of a Return Bar, up from 76% prior to the expansion. The additional sites build upon Happy Returns' existing box-free and label-free drop-off capabilities at locations such as The UPS Store, Staples and Ulta Beauty.
The new locations also provide increased convenience and choice for consumers making returns, Sobie said. Reaching 10,000 locations isn't a new milestone for Happy Returns, however. The company already exceeded that mark prior to being acquired by UPS in 2023. Happy Returns "shrunk the network a little bit" post-UPS acquisition to ensure each Return Bar location provided a reliable experience for shoppers and the retailers receiving the returns, Sobie said.
Although more locations will enable a wider reach, Happy Returns still takes a measured approach to its Return Bar expansion, Sobie noted. The company works to make sure each location it adds will receive an adequate level of volume to power its consolidated returns service.
"It's a thoughtful expansion to say, 'Hey, we're going to add these new locations,'" Sobie said. "We're confident we have the volume in order to justify them."
Happy Returns handles returns for a variety of retailers, and the company is adding the fashion brand Lulus to its customer roster as well. Lulus is implementing Happy Returns as a return shipping solution set to go live in the first part of Q2 2026, President and CIO Mark Vos said on the company's Q4 2025 earnings call last month.
"We believe this will improve the return experience for eligible customers through expanded drop-off locations and the elimination of printed return shipping labels," Vos said. "Additionally, the consolidated nature of return shipping will reduce return shipping costs, which have been steadily increasing year over year."
Happy Returns isn't the only option in the consolidated returns space. UPS rival FedEx offers Easy Returns, which launched last summer at 3,000 FedEx Office and Kohl's locations.
