Macy’s will fully shutter its distribution center in South Windsor, Connecticut, later this year, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice dated Jan. 12.
The retailer will close its store delivery and customer returns operating units at the facility after announcing plans to cut its backstage operating unit in October. The latest closures will impact 57 employees, with layoffs expected to start March 14. Once the shutdowns are complete, operations at the site will fully end, per the notice.
Severance and benefits information will be available to impacted employees, as well as transfer information and opportunities. Impacted roles include warehouse associates, scanning equipment operators and maintenance mechanics.
Macy’s did not provide a reason for the closure and did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication. Macy’s also plans to close a fulfillment center in Oklahoma this spring.
The retailer has been working to right-size its supply chain as part of a larger “Bold New Chapter” transformation that aims to drive $235 million in cost savings by this year. Other turnaround efforts include the opening of a 1.4 million-square-foot fulfillment facility in North Carolina.
