Fareway Stores has broken ground on a significant freezer building expansion at its distribution center in Boone, Iowa, the Midwestern supermarket chain announced last week.
The 105,000-square-foot addition to the cold food-handling facility will almost double its pallet capacity, increase pallet facings by a third and help the company convert space currently used for frozen items into extra dry storage, according to the retailer. The grocer said the improvements, which are scheduled to be completed in mid-2027, will allow it to better serve its growing fleet of stores while also improving efficiency.
Fareway added that it also intends for the expansion project to serve as a foundation for future investments in automation and other technology at the distribution center.
“This project reflects our continued commitment to remain the best in meat and grocery, by ensuring we have the infrastructure to support our current locations and future growth,” Fareway Stores CEO Reynolds Cramer said in a statement.
The distribution center expansion follows recent updates to the grocer’s store fleet. In November 2025, Fareway debuted its first full-service meat and grocery store in Kansas. Earlier last year, the retailer, which operates more than 140 stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska, purchased two Iowa grocery stores from Brothers Market.
In January, the retailer shut down a small-format meat store in Luverne, Minnesota, after determining that the 2,300-square-foot location was not large enough to be financially successful.
