Family Dollar is permanently closing a distribution center in Matthews, North Carolina, laying off 373 employees in the process, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letter viewed by Supply Chain Dive.
The company will cut jobs in phases, per the notice. Some employees are slated to be laid off starting May 18, or within the following 14-day period. Remaining workers will be laid off on Aug. 12, or within a 14-day period thereafter.
Family Dollar will offer affected employees a severance package but workers do not have bumping rights at other company facilities nor are they represented by a union, according to the notice.
It is unclear why the facility is closing or how many retail locations it serves. Family Dollar did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
Family Dollar has 394 retail locations in North Carolina. Matthews, North Carolina, is a suburb of Charlotte located in Mecklenburg County. Family Dollar has 114 stores in the Charlotte region, according to the company’s website.
Family Dollar joins the list of retailers making adjustments to their distribution networks. Saks Global, which is the parent company of department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, recently announced plans to close two distribution centers in Pennsylvania as it navigates a bankruptcy filing. Meanwhile, Walgreens intends to shutter a distribution center in Texas, laying off nearly 160 employees.
