Dive Brief:
- French shipping line CMA CGM will collaborate with San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup Shone to harness data from sensors aboard container ships to improve safety and tracking, according to The Maritime Executive.
- CMA CGM will share data from the sensors with Shone so the startup can more accurately predict and detect the location of each ship.
- The collaboration is likely part of CMA CGM's previously announced digital transformation strategy, which includes new hires and new AI initiatives.
Dive Insight:
As the ocean shipping industry is slow to adapt to new technology, CMA CGM is quickly making a name for itself as a leading innovator with its push into AI and blockchain and commitment to supporting tech startups in supply chain.
But CMA CGM isn't the only shipping line with a strategic tech initiative. In April, OOCL announced a partnership with Microsoft to train 200 AI developers to find use cases for AI in ocean shipping.
In fact, the industry should expect to see more shipping lines experiment with AI, especially to improve logistics. A joint report from DHL and IBM found that AI is becoming more affordable and accessible for logistics in every industry and is proving to be very useful for harnessing data, predictive analytics and streamlining customs brokerage.
CMA CGM was not able to provide comments to Supply Chain Dive before press time.
