Dive Insight:
The Jacksonville air cargo facility is Amazon Air’s first air freight location in Northeast Florida, and aims to expand the company’s logistics and distribution network in the region, according to the release.
By planning for this new facility, Amazon Air continues to evolve its air cargo strategy to optimize its U.S network.
Although it has ceased operations at five U.S. airports since 2023, the company is still focused on expanding its reach to additional U.S. hubs beyond its superhub at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), according to the a 2025 report from the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University. As Amazon Air adjusts some of its volume away from CVG, the company has increased flight activity in regions such as Southern California, Texas and the Eastern Seaboard.
Amazon Air has also been prioritizing aircraft with larger tonnage capacity, per the report. The unit currently operates 10 A330-300 freighters, which offer 17% more tonnage and 6% higher volume capacity than the fleet’s B767-300Fs — its second largest aircraft after the A330-300. Elsewhere in its fleet strategy, Amazon Air revised its carrier agreement with Sun Country Airlines in 2024 to operate eight additional B737Fs through 2030.
Currently, Amazon Air — which has more than 100 aircraft in its fleet — operates over 250 daily flights, according to the company’s website. In addition to parcel, the unit transports dangerous goods, general cargo, pharmaceuticals and perishables.
