G2Mint today announced the release of its latest benchmark report, The Margin Leak in Logistics, an independent study examining how transportation and logistics organizations manage critical operational decisions that directly impact profitability.
Based on a survey of 100 respondents across freight, transportation, warehousing, and logistics organizations, the report highlights a persistent challenge facing the industry: margin is often not lost through major failures, but through hundreds of small, manual decisions made every day.
Examples include selecting the wrong carrier, missing surcharge opportunities, entering rates incorrectly, delaying quotes, or tendering freight without complete visibility into cost and margin implications.
The benchmark findings reveal that many organizations continue to rely heavily on manual processes:
- 69% of organizations still handle a moderate, large, or near-total share of pricing, rating, procurement, and routing decisions manually.
- 81% identified at least one workflow that is ready for AI-driven automation today.
- Only 1% reported aggregating and measuring AI value at the executive level.
“These findings highlight a significant gap between AI interest and operational execution,” said Dan Clark, Founder & CEO of G2Mint. “In transportation, margin is created through the quality and speed of decisions made before freight moves. Organizations that continue to rely on disconnected workflows and manual processes risk leaving revenue and profitability on the table.”
The report explores where manual work continues to create hidden costs, why many AI initiatives struggle to deliver measurable results, and which transportation workflows offer the greatest opportunity for automation and margin improvement.
Key areas identified for prioritization include:
- Freight rating
- Surcharge management
- Carrier selection
- Load tendering
- Margin-aware decision-making
As logistics organizations look to improve efficiency, profitability, and scalability, the report provides a data-driven view into where operational bottlenecks remain and how automation can help eliminate them.
