Port Houston cargo volumes fell 15% year over year to 297,622 total TEUs in November — but empties fell 34%.
When comparing volumes by the same time last month, cargo processed declined by 19%. But compared to pre-pandemic levels, total containers processed at the port increased by 21%.
Amid the changes, Port Houston welcomed one its largest vessels to-date, the CMA CGM Lisa Marie, according to a port press release, with a capacity of nearly 11,000 TEUs.
The port is planning for growth as it prepares for additional large vessels to call the port.
“As we continue to expand the Houston Ship Channel we will be able to accommodate larger vessels in the very near future. We are also adding wharf and yard capacity at our container terminals, so we are well-equipped to continue to help drive the growth of our entire region,” Roger Guenther, executive director at Port Houston, said in a press release.
