North Carolina Railroad Company plans to invest up to $600,000 in rail infrastructure for lumber company Great Southern Wood-NC’s new manufacturing facility in the state, according to an Aug. 25 press release.
NCRR’s investment will help fund the construction of on-site rail infrastructure for Great Southern Wood-NC’s upcoming lumber treatment facility located at Laurinburg-Maxton Airport in Scotland County, North Carolina. The lumber company expects to invest $40 million into the project.
“Once operational, Great Southern Wood-NC will use the rail project to receive and distribute a minimum of 421 railcar shipments annually by 2030,” per the release.
Great Southern Wood-NC produces and distributes building materials to residential, commercial and industrial dealers. The company also works with agricultural sectors across 28 states and Washington D.C.
"Rail-served businesses like Great Southern Wood-NC understand the benefits of lower transportation costs, greater supply chain efficiency and expanded market access,” President and CEO Carl Warren at NCRR said in the release. “The track to sustained success is built on infrastructure.”
Shippers and manufacturers have been making strategic rail infrastructure investments.
Last year, Hobby Lobby teamed up with BNSF Railway to open an intermodal facility in Oklahoma City to simplify loaded container movements between the Port of Long Beach, the Port of Los Angeles and the retailer’s distribution network in the state.
In June, International Paper broke ground on a packaging facility in Rankin County, Mississippi, which will have Canadian Pacific Kansas City manage inbound raw materials and outbound distribution for the company. In turn, International Paper aims to streamline supply chains, reduce handling and improve transit reliability.
