Macy’s is closing an operating unit at its distribution center in South Windsor, Connecticut, impacting 106 employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice dated Oct. 28.
The retailer will conduct the layoffs at its “Backstage operation” in phases between Dec. 28, 2025, and Jan. 10, 2026, per the notice. Warehouse associates, operations managers, warehouse leads and ARO coordinators are among the impacted positions. All layoffs will be permanent.
Impacted employees will receive information regarding severance and transfer opportunities to open positions in nearby Macy’s locations; however, workers at the facility have no bumping rights and are not represented by a union, according to the WARN filing
“Macy's, Inc. is continuing to simplify and modernize our supply chain to better serve customers and operate more efficiently,” a Macy’s spokesperson told Supply Chain Dive in an email. “As part of this work, we are concluding Backstage operations at our South Windsor, CT facility and centralizing them at our dedicated off-price facility in Columbus, OH. Other operations at South Windsor will continue.”
The retailer has been pushing its “Bold New Chapter” transformation plan as it shoots to right-size its supply chain network in a bid to drive savings. As part of the plan, the retailer expects altering its distribution network will help it improve profitability.
Macy’s turnaround efforts also include expanding the use of automation, such as in its recently opened distribution center in China Grove, North Carolina. The facility, which opened Oct. 16, has the largest storage capacity and highest productivity potential in the retailer’s network, per a company press release.
“Over the past two years, we’ve tested and learned from automation at other sites, refining how it can make our operations more efficient and our colleagues work safer and smarter,” Sean Barbour, SVP of supply chain, said in the release. “Now, we’re building on those lessons with our most advanced deployment yet including the debut of a new warehouse management system that will provide greater accuracy, flexibility, and speed.”
